Last week, it was reported that information from at least 500 million Yahoo accounts was stolen back in 2014. According to Yahoo, the theft may have included names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, and in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers. Complicating things, this adds another kink in its pending acquisition by Verizon. It is unclear what effect, if any, this significant breach will have on Yahoo’s sale price.
While the usual protocol is for users is to change their password, that may not be the case this time. According to Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) researcher Simon Zuckerbraun, just changing your password may not be enough to protect your account. After Simon logged in to his account and changed his password, he accessed his iPhone Mail application since he had configured the app to use his Yahoo account. Even though he had changed the password associated with his Yahoo account, the phone was still connected and he was never prompted for his new password. Apparently, Yahoo had issued a permanent credential to his iPhone device. This credential does not expire and is not revoked when the password changes, potentially continuing to grant access to your account even after you’ve changed your password. For more details and recommendations on how to make sure your account is secure, read the blog detailing Simon’s findings.

Zero-Day Filters
There are two new zero-day filters covering one vendor in this week’s Digital Vaccine (DV) package. A number of existing filters in this week’s DV package were modified to update the filter description, update specific filter deployment recommendation, increase filter accuracy and/or optimize performance.
